Goat hunting has closed in a management area near Skagway, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game announced Wednesday.
Resident and nonresident goat hunting seasons in the area bounded by the White Pass and Yukon Railroad on the west, the East Fork of the Skagway River on the south and the Canadian border on the north and east sides is closed. The closure is effective as of Thursday, Sept. 28.
Hunters in the area had killed the amount of goat ADFG allowed this year. The “guideline harvest objective,” the amount of goat ADFG established could be harvested this year, was two male goats or one female goat. Two male mountain goats had been harvested as of Wednesday.
An 2016 aerial survey of the area established a population in the area of 46 adults and six kids, or young goat.
