The Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition (JSPC) wants to thank the Juneau Community Foundation for a recent grant to help support the operations of the Sources of Strength project in the Juneau-Douglas High School, Thunder Mountain High School and Yaakosge Daakahidi High School this year.
Sources of Strength is a best-practice, youth-suicide prevention project designed to harness the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, bullying and substance abuse. The mission of Sources of Strength is to prevent suicide by increasing help-seeking behaviors and promoting connections between peers and caring adults. Sources of Strength strengthens multiple sources of support (protective factors) around young individuals so that when times get hard they have strengths to rely on.
The Juneau Community Foundation has helped the Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition (and dozens of other non-profits and programs in Juneau) in the past. This grant, however, was a fantastic surprise, and we want to, again, thank Amy Skilbred and the crew at the Foundation for their continued support for suicide prevention efforts in Juneau.
