“Kidnapped” now in bookstores; reading scheduled

“Kidnapped by Muslim Rebels,” Juneau couple Loy and Ludy Maturan’s true account of the days they and their seven-month-old granddaughter spent kidnapped by extremists in the Philippines 26 years ago, is now available at Hearthside Books.

At the time they were kidnapped, Loy Maturan was president of Dansalan college in the Philippines. The couple spent almost a week slogging through jungle and being hidden in the houses of people affiliated in some way with the extremists. Muslim friends of theirs negotiated for their release, for much less than the amount the kidnappers had initially demanded; because of a continued sense of threat, the Maturans filed for political asylum in the United States in 1991 and are now U.S. citizens living in Juneau.

The couple will be speaking and signing books 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at Hearthside Book’s Nugget Mall location.
