Linda Torgerson, a teacher at the Juneau Community Charter School, has won Discovery Southeast’s 2016 Discovery Award, which honors teachers who go above and beyond to engage their students in nature. Torgerson has taken every opportunity to integrate the outdoors into her work. She collects natural items to share in class, integrates natural materials into art, takes children on hikes, and embraces working with children openly, in a natural environment. Her work with students and mentorship of teachers has instilled an appreciation of nature in innumerable Juneau children, said an email from Discovery Southeast.
Torgerson will be presented with her award and honored at the nonprofit’s banquet on April 30. Doors open for that event, which features a silent auction and more, at 5:30 p.m. Find out more at www.discoverysoutheast.org.
