A medical student from Juneau has completed the foundations of clinical medicine phase of his training and received an award from the Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WAMI) University of Washington medical program through the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA).
Nathan Ord, a 2008 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School, earned his white coat during a ceremony this week at UAA. The ceremony marked the successful completion of the foundations of clinical medicine phase of Ord’s training. He will now move on from studying basic science curriculum to his practical/clinical study in hospitals and clinics.
Additionally, Ord was awarded the Xavier Engle Spirit Award. Ord, like Xavier Engle, exhibits “integrity, compassion and kindness toward the human condition,” according to a release by the WAMI program. His passion, courage, actions and aptitude displayed beyond medicine earned Ord this “Joy of Life” award, presented by Xavier Engle’s cousin, Jeffrey Nelson, who traveled from Washington, D.C. for the ceremony.
Ord double-majored in biochemistry biophysics and molecular biology at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. before joining the UAA WAMI program. He will go on to clerkship rotations at clinics and hospitals throughout the northwest United States.
