Mendenhall Flying Lions thanks Juneau

The Mendenhall Flying Lions would like to, once again, thank the Juneau community for their tremendous support for our annual Light Flight event.

Every year hundreds of you show up at the Juneau Airport terminal where you’re asked to wait your turn. And you do. Many of you returning every single year.

This is the phenomenon about Light Flights. It doesn’t matter how long you have to wait for your turn, you still show up every single year to do it again. And we appreciate your continued support of this fundraising event.

Light Flights started in 1991 by Coastal Helicopter to help out a family friend with medical expenses for their child who had Neurofibromatosis. The Mendenhall Flying Lions came on board around 2003 to help. Coastal donates half the proceeds to the Children’s Tumor Foundation and the other half will go towards Lions projects.

The success of this fundraiser wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of Coastal Helicopters and their employees (staff, pilots and mechanics) who donate their time; Petro Marine who donates the fuel; Juneau Radio Center and KTOO for on-air time; Juneau Airport for allowing us to take over the North Wing; Fred Meyer for their generous donation of water and cookies; the Juneau Empire for their generous media support; and to Santa and his elf!

By the time the evening was over, we transported 350 passengers over the Mendenhall Valley during a three-hour period. Thank you Juneau for your continued support and understanding for the noise over the Valley on this special night.

If you would like to get involved with the Lions, contact Michael Norton at (907) 957-1697 or email mendenhallflyinglions@gmail.com.

president of the Juneau Mendenhall Flying Lions Club
