The National Park Service is seeking local sculptors to provide concept designs for a sculpture that will become the centerpiece of a new “Ton of Goods” exhibit on Broadway, directly across the street from the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park visitor center. This is part of the NPS’s Centennial celebration.
The NPS hopes to contract with the winning contestant to provide a scale model for a large sculpture of a gold rush stampeder upon arrival in Skagway in early 1898. This outdoor sculpture will replace the indoor exhibit NPS used to have for Ton of Goods.
The plan for the area includes wooden crates and barrels near the sculpture, interpretive wayside exhibits and accessible seating. The sculpture will be produced separately from this site plan, but it needs to fit with the overall theme. A copy of the site plan and additional background information can be provided upon request.
Sculptors interested in entering the design contest should submit sketches and/or a model accompanied by concept descriptions before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. The NPS will select the winning entry by March 31, 2016. Contact superintendent Mike Tranel at (907) 983-9200 with questions.
