Five students from Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé won the Tsunami Bowl, a regional ocean science academic competition March 22-24 that is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB).
The Tsunami Bowl, hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Seward Marine Center, is part of a nationwide competition that tests students’ knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended team challenge questions. Students on the championship team include Sam Cheng, Leif St. Clair, Peyton Edmunds, Edward Hu (captain) and Alex Mallott. They are coached by Shannon Easterly and Shelby Nesheim.
The NOSB is an academic competition of the Center for Ocean Leadership (COL), a University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Community Program.
“Congratulations to our regional winners,” said Dr. Sonya Legg, COL director. “You are to be commended for your many months of study and preparation for competition. Importantly, you’ve learned more than how to successfully compete – you’ve learned about the many challenges facing our global ocean and how each and every one of you can play a crucial role in addressing those challenges as an ocean-literate community member. I’d also like to thank our regional coordinators and volunteers. The NOSB can only succeed with your continued dedication to the program and its students.”
The 2024 NOSB regional competitions are made possible through the following major sponsors: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program; Schmidt Ocean Institute; National Aeronautics and Space Administration; Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation; Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation; and IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society.
