November is diabetes awareness month

On Nov. 4, the Mendenhall Flying Lions Club will be holding its 22nd annual barbecue at McGivney’s Sports Bar & Grill, in the Mendenhall Mall, to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

The barbecue starts at noon and features smoked pork ribs, cole slaw and beans for $15 per plate and $40 per rack donation. Dine in or take out. Additionally, the barbecue will serve Alaskan Amber. Thank you to the people at Alaskan Brewing for their continued support of this fundraiser. The Lions will serve until the food is gone, but no later than 5 p.m.

We have raised more than $157,000 in the previous 21 years. Money raised helps the diabetes association send kids from Southeast Alaska to diabetes camp, as well as conduct health fairs and provide diabetes awareness and training materials throughout Southeast.

The success of the project is due to the generous support of McGivney’s Sports Bar & Grill, Randy’s Rib Shack, Alaskan Brewing Company, Teddy’s Tasty Meats (out of Anchorage), IGA/Super Bear, and Food Services of America.
