Perseverance to host fundraiser for “Our Voices Will Be Heard”

Perseverance Theatre will host a fundraiser in support of its upcoming world premiere, “Our Voices Will Be Heard” by Tlingit playwright Vera Starbard, on Monday, Jan. 4 at 7 pm at the Hangar Ballroom.

“Our Voices Will Be Heard,” which opens Jan. 15 at Perseverance, is described as “a powerful mother-daughter journey that reveals how generations face the choice of continuing to perpetuate or disrupt family violence.” The play, which features an all-Native cast, was commissioned by The Alaska Native Heritage Center for the Alaska Native Playwrights Project, 2011-2013, and developed by Native Voices at the Autry at the Native Voices 2014 Annual Retreat and Festival of New Plays.

At Monday’s fundraiser, Artistic Director Art Rotch, playwright Starbard, and director Larissa FastHorse will lead an open conversation about the play. Local multi-cultural dance group, Yees Ku Oo, will perform, and fry bread mini treats and a dessert auction will be available.

The event will be hosted by Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott, Albert Kookesh, Richard Peterson, Anthony Mallott, Mandy Mallott, Nancy Barnes and Dr. Marlene Johnson, along with Perseverance Theatre’s Board of Directors.

Gifts made to Perseverance Theatre at the event or in support of the play are matched by the Benito & Frances C. Gaguine Foundation.
