The Pioneers of Alaska was founded in Nome in 1907. There are 32 igloos, 16 men igloos and 16 women igloos.
The purpose of the Pioneers is to preserve the names of all Alaska Pioneers on its rolls, to collect and preserve the literature and incidents of Alaska’s history, and to promote the best interests of Alaska.
The Pioneers of Alaska do many things. Some of the ways the local igloo helps Juneau is through scholarships for the graduating seniors of our members which continue to give Juneau responsible, participating members of our society; they vote to donate money to the Juneau-Douglas City Museum so visitors can visit free of charge for one month; they are involved with Canada, and other igloos in creating a memorial for the sinking of the Princess Sofia. They are active in helping to come up with ways for the financial economy of our state. There are many other ways in which they are involved with the community.
