Members of the Juneau Amateur Radio Club will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day at the Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center located on Sherwood Lane (across from the DMV) from 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25 until 10 a.m. Sunday, June 26.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America and Canada have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the skill and science of Amateur Radio. Participants also practice emergency communications for use during disaster situations. Frequently ham radio is the last resort for communications during the first few days of an emergency when all other forms of contact are down.
The event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend, especially those who have held licenses in the past but are no longer on the air. The best time to stop by is 12-5 p.m. Saturday. There will be a picnic from 12-2 p.m. that day, and while visitors are welcome at any time, “If someone shows up at 2 a.m. Sunday morning they will be received graciously by a couple of lonely operators,” wrote club membership chairman David Bruce in an email.
