Almost 100 years ago the Princess Sophia was sailing from Skagway along the Lynn Cana bound for Vancouver.

But before the ship reached its destination, the vessel struck the Vanderblt Reef on Oct. 23, 1918 and on Oct. 26., 2018, the passengers and the crew died as the ship succumbed to the waves.

In remembrance of the 350 people who died in the worst maritime disaster in Alaska history, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum is leading a walking tour from 5:30-7 p.m May 29 starting at the City Museum and ending at Evergreen Cemetery.

Museum volunteer, retired Foreign Service Officer, and Douglas resident Kirk Smith will lead the tour which will focus on a discussion of the events and circumstances leading up to the disaster as well as a visit to the Evergreen Cemetery to pay respects at the graves of the Sophia’s victims.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for children ages 12 and under and may be purchased at the City Museum or by calling 586-3572. Tickets include free admission to the City Museum and a 20 percent discount coupon for the museum store.
