Seven Juneauites appointed to state boards

Gov. Bill Walker has appointed seven Juneau residents to state board and commissions recently. They are:

• Cory Baxter was reappointed to the Organized seat on the Alaska Workforce Investment Board for a term beginning Oct. 26, 2016 and ending Oct. 13, 2020. Mr. Baxter is the District 8 Representative and the Executive Board Member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. The Board works to provide job training opportunities that Alaskans need in a competitive marketplace.

• Lowell Fair was reappointed to the Member/ADF&G Management seat on the Pacific Salmon Commission – Northern Panel for a term beginning Oct. 26, 2016 and ending Sept. 30, 2020. Mr. Fair is a Fish and Game Coordinator with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game as well as a Fishery Biologist. The Commission will help to negotiate and implement treaty provisions and provide recommendations for the management of Alaska fisheries.

• Shelly Owens was reappointed to the Consumer seat on the Alaska Council on Emergency Medical Services for a term beginning Nov. 5, 2016 and ending Nov. 5, 2020. Ms. Owens worked as an Emergency Medical Services Manager for the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services before she retired in 2013. She holds a JD from Golden Gate University School of Law. The council advises the Commissioner of Health and Social Services and the Governor on planning and implementation of emergency medical services system.

• Stephanie Butler was appointed to the Higher Education seat on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education for a term beginning Oct. 26, 2016 and ending June 25, 2019. Ms. Butler is the Executive Director of the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education and the Alaska Student Loan Corporation. The commission develops and disseminates information for higher education planning in the western states and provides access and opportunity for students from the 15 member states to sharing of higher education resources.

• William Ware was appointed to the Tribal seat on the Community and Public Transportation Advisory Commission for a term beginning Oct. 26, 2016 and ending Aug. 15, 2017. Mr. Ware is the Central Council Tlingit Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska Tribal Transportation Manager. The Board’s work to evaluate Alaska’s community and public transportation infrastructure, and to recommend improvements for better coordination, will lead to cost savings and the removal of barriers to better serve Alaskans’ transportation requirements.

• Eleanor Vinson was appointed to the Public seat on the Board of Professional Counselors for a term beginning Oct. 26, 2016 and ending March 1, 2020. Ms. Vinson is a retired Licensing Examiner with the State of Alaska. She holds a BA in Criminal Justice and Sociology from Montana State University. The Board regulates licensing standards, examines applicants, and provides disciplinary sanction of professional counselors as needed.

• Richard Jones was appointed to the Public seat on the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors for a term beginning Oct. 26, 2016 and ending March 1, 2018. Mr. Jones retired as a Licensing Examiner for the Department of Community, Commerce and Economic Development. The Board regulates the practice of architecture, engineering, land surveying, and landscape architecture in Alaska. Their work will not only contribute to professionalism, but will also protect Alaskans who use these services.
