Sister Cities hockey tournament successful due to the help of many

On Feb. 25 the Juneau Old Timers and the Whitehorse Knights played the first game of the Rainforest Classic Hockey Tournament. The Juneau Sister Cities Committee supports this game with a trophy that has been in Whitehorse for the last three years since Whitehorse won the first game in this competition. We were delighted when Juneau Old Timers won the trophy back for Juneau in a six to three decision.

Many thanks are due to a variety of Juneau community members. First thanks go to Chris Mertl for organizing the Rainforest Classic Hockey Tournament and the Treadwell Arena for hosting the event. We especially appreciate the Prospector Hotel for donating the money for the ice time for this particular game. Concessions were shared with Juneau Douglas Ice Association. The referees who donated their time were fast skating, fun and fair. Darryl Tseu did a masterful job of singing both the Canadian and the American national anthems. Mayor Becker was the official puck dropper making sure that the game was started in the spirit of international friendly competition. Each and every one of those Juneau Old Timers came out on the ice and gave their all to bring the Sister Cities trophy home to Juneau where it will reside in the trophy case at the Treadwell Ice Rink. Thanks to the members of the Juneau community who came to cheer on their team. The Juneau Sister Cities Committee is an advisory committee to the City Assembly. We work to enrich Juneau’s relationships with our five Sister Cities, Whitehorse, Canada; Kalibo, Philippines: Vladivostok, Russia: Mishan City, China; and Chai Yi, Taiwan.
