State employees give back to Juneau community

State workers at the Division of Retirement and Benefits (DRB) take their responsibility to help people seriously. Following their motto “We Make Good Things Happen,” management and staff for ten years have conducted an annual internal food drive.

DRB this year raised 6,779.5 pounds of food for the Glory Hole and the Juneau Food Bank.

“This is a time of year when people come together to take care of each other,” said Commissioner Leslie Ridle of the Department of Administration, which oversees DRB. “I’m proud of the effort and commitment shown by our staff.”

DRB alternates between the Juneau Food Bank, Helping Hands and the Glory Hole for donations. This year, they chose the Glory Hole based on reports of increased homelessness in the community. The Glory Hole provides 60,000 meals per year. The Glory Hole this year received more food than it could accept, so the extra food was given to the food bank.

The food drive is crafted as a contest between division sections, whcih compete for treats and bragging rights. This year’s winning group was Operations, which defeated last year’s champion by more than 2,000 pounds. The losing team will provide a snack for Friday’s staff meeting.
