Student activism for homeless youth

The Juneau-Douglas High School Interact Club, Thunder Mountain High School Interact Club and JDHS Sources of Strength Club will host the annual Homeless Awareness Sleep Out on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. at Riverbend Elementary School.

The students will sleep outside for 12 hours to raise awareness and money for homeless students in the Juneau School District and the Zach Gordon Youth Center. Pamphlets will be passed out and people are invited to come talk about the issue of homelessness.

In addition, the clubs will participate in the “Honk for the Homeless” campaign and will be holding signs. For every car that honks at the students, the local Rotary clubs will donate a sum of money. People may also directly donate by talking to the student clubs.

For more information contact the president of the JDHS Interact Club, Tasha Elizarde, at jdhsinteract@gmail.com.
