Fourth graders Sofia Jordan and Miranda Stichert were some of the first children to enroll in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library when the program started in Juneau. This month they came to the Association for the Education of Young Children office to give back by completing a day of service with Girl Scout Troop 4008 and troop leader Samia Savell. “Oh I remember this book!” was a common phrase during their service day. Thanks to Miranda and Sofia – they not only tackled a tower of books, they inspired and warmed our hearts with their community service.
AEYC houses the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for more than 1,500 children in a dozen Southeast Alaska communities. Thanks to local sponsors and local volunteers, children are enrolled at birth and receive a book in the mail until they turn five. In a survey conducted by Best Beginnings this spring more than 90 percent of parents reported the program helps their child be more excited about reading and increases the time they read with their child.
