On Saturday, Dec. 12, AWARE, Inc. hosted a Jingle Jog 5k and 1 mile run to raise funds for Girls on the Run. AWARE would like to thank everyone who came to the Jingle Jog and generously donated to show their support for the program.
Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in the grades 3-8. During this 12-week, 24-lesson program, girls learn about themselves, work as a team and practice giving back to the community.
The program registration fee, which covers the cost of supplies, is $100. This cost is too high for many families to pay. We want all girls to be able to participate in the program, regardless of ability to pay. For this reason, AWARE offers scholarships to anyone who requests one — no questions asked. In addition, we provide new running shoes to girls who need them so they’re able to participate in all the running activities.
About 60 percent of the girls who participate in the program request scholarships, and we are thrilled to have the financial support of our local community to ensure our program includes all girls who wish to participate.
If you were unable to make it to the Jingle Jog to donate to Girls on the Run, you’re welcome to visit our website to make a donation: gotrgreateralaska.org. If you’d like to be involved with the program in other ways, there are many opportunities.
One of the most rewarding volunteer experiences is coaching a Girls on the Run team. Volunteer coaches facilitate our easy-to-follow curriculum with sister coaches and groups of 7-20 girls over the course of the 12-week season. Coaches are not required to be runners, they simply must be passionate about the mission of Girls on the Run, committed to working with a group of girls, and able to bring energy and joy to each practice. The Spring 2016 new coach training is Feb. 6.
