Warrior Code, translated by George Ramos (Kai Monture’s grandfather)
1 – Never make yourself “heavier” than others. (The word ‘heavy’ implies an internal state as well, in Tlingit, Monture said. “You have to keep your inside as balanced as your outside,” he said. “Don’t have too much pride or arrogance.”
2 – Be humble before your people.
3 – Reach for the hand of your fellow man and pick him up.
4 – Always protect your people.
5 – Fight to the last breath. (It was very hard to survive serious wounds sustained in battle, and this would be “motivation for a warrior to know he’s not returning home to his village, but has as many heartbeats and breaths as he has left to defeat as many enemies as (he) can,” Monture said.
