On Feb. 17, 1987, the Canadian precision aerobatic team, the Snowbirds, were set to perform over Juneau the weekend of May 8. Their seventh visit was to include a traditional barbeque and other public events hosted by the Douglas and Glacier Valley Lions Clubs.
At the Governor’s Mansion, Gov. Steve Cowper proposed a budget plan that would boost a child care assistant program’s finances by 22 percent. Press secretary David Ramseur said that Gov. Cowper noticed the increase in requests the program had received and because child care is vital to working women in Alaska, he decided to boost the program’s funding. Also happening in state news was the beginning of formal talks between union Public Employees Local 71 and the state.
The House State Affairs Committee approved a resolution that urged the U.S. Coast Guard to reconsider the relocation of Juneau personnel. The resolution had already passed the Senate because of its potential impacts on Juneau’s economy and the fisheries law enforcement.
