On Feb. 19, 1987, Gov. Steve Cowper and the Alaska Legislature formed a budget plan for the upcoming year. The House Finance Committee passed a bill giving Gov. Cowper permission to spend the $428 million reserve fund, and representatives described meetings with Gov. Cowper “wonderful”.
At the University of Alaska-Juneau, a reorganization shifts the number of jobs available at the school. An estimated 45 positions were to be lost in the change.
Child support enforcement officials brought the issue of overdue payments up, sending letters to over 11,500 Alaskans who were behind on their payments and that their names would be sent to credit bureaus. The program was implemented to target self-employed workers, who tended to be more difficult to track down, according to the head of the Child Support Enforcement Division.
