SITKA – Jim Seeland, Assistant Professor of Fisheries Technology at the University of Alaska Southeast, received a Lifetime Achievement Award on Jan. 24 at the 2017 Alaska Fish Culture Conference at the Sitka Sound Science Center.
Seeland moved to Alaska in 1980 to work at a Pacific salmon enhancement facility in Prince William Sound. Two years later he relocated to Sitka to work for Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture where he helped to develop the Medvejie Salmon Hatchery. Seeland has remained Sitka and helped develop the UAS Fisheries Technology Program.
UAS Chancellor Rick Caulfield expressed great appreciation for Seeland’s leadership in expanding the Fisheries Technology program throughout coastal Alaska.
“Jim came to UAS with a wealth of experience in aquaculture and an infectious enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge with others,” Caulfied said in a press release. “He and his colleagues at the Sitka Campus are educating the next generation of fishermen and entrepreneurs in the maritime industry. This lifetime achievement award is well deserved.”
