The documentary “History Expedition: Child Labor in India” will be shown at the University of Alaska Southeast’s Juneau Campus inside the Egan Lecture Hall at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15. The event is free.
This film shows the history and working conditions of children and child labor in Karnataka, India. Director John Devaraj will introduce, show and discuss his film.
Devaraj runs the Born Free Art School in India, a school exclusively for street, working and free-bonded labor children, with the objective to educate and develop children through the arts to eventually put them back into traditional education. Devaraj said the idea behind the school is to liberate children from social, cultural, physical and emotional traumas by gaining self-confidence through artistic expression. Devaraj also said children who go through the school invite other children to participate and become teachers of the arts themselves.
