The University of Alaska Southeast has a new provost.
UAS officials announced Thursday that Dr. Karen Carey was selected as the new provost after a yearlong national search.
She replaces Rick Caulfield, who stepped into the UAS Chancellor position after former chancellor John Pugh retired last year.
According to a university news release, Carey earned her Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Cincinnati. She comes to UAS from the California State University Channel Islands, in Ventura, California, where she served as the Dean of Arts and Sciences. In that role, she was responsible for strategic planning and student learning as well as managing academic programs with more than 200 faculty.
As UAS Provost, Carey will collaborate with faculty to support the teaching, research and service missions of UAS. She will also serve as the academic liaison with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and University to maintain UAS’ accreditation, and is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable standards and reporting expectations.
