SITKA — The Sitka black-tailed deer state hunting season in Unit 4 will end Dec. 31. Unit 4 includes all of Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof islands, as well as smaller islands within the unit.
The federal subsistence deer season for federally qualified hunters continues on federal lands within Unit 4 until Jan. 31, 2017, unless closed earlier by the U.S. Forest Service District Rangers.
Successful hunters must submit hunt reports within 15 days after harvesting the bag limit. All hunters who obtained deer harvest tickets, even those who did not hunt, must return completed hunt reports to Fish & Game within 15 days after the close of the season.
Federally qualified subsistence users continuing to hunt into January are reminded to obtain a valid 2017 hunting license. Deer harvest tickets issued for regulatory year 2016 continue to be valid for the federal season extending through January 2017, but hunters must be aware of the land ownership where they are hunting. For example, hunters targeting deer on beaches should be aware that state land ownership extends to the mean high tide line.
