Upcoming classes at the Totem Heritage Center

The Totem Heritage Center is accepting registration for several spring classes.

Haida artist Reg Davidson will lead a class on Intermediate and Advanced Northwest Coast Design Feb. 24–March 5 at the Totem Heritage Center in Ketchikan. The class runs Mondays–Fridays from 5:30–9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am–4 pm.

Davidson will guide students in understanding the interrelationship of foundational formline elements and how to combine them to create complex and intricate images. Students will gain experience composing original designs for their own carving, painting, and regalia projects while working on a dance apron. This class is a requirement for those pursuing a Certificate of Merit in carving or regalia. The prerequisite is Introduction to NWC Design. The registration fee is $225/$200

In March, Instructor Jake Beimler will lead a course on tool making for carvers. The class runs March 25–April 9, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6–9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am- 4:30 pm. Ketchikan blacksmith Beimler has studied the process of creating historic and modern tools from cultures around the world, and has made customized traditional Northwest Coast tools on commission for several local carvers. Learn how to forge blades, shape handles, and assemble your own customized adze and carving knife. The registration fee is $225/$200 and the materials fee is TBA (cost of blade metal).

In April, Woody Anderson will lead a two-day class on tool sharpening. The class runs April 15 and 16, and the registration fee is $70/$60

Ketchikan carver Anderson will teach students the methods and the supplies to best maintain their blades. Students will learn the techniques of sharpening and honing for various types of carving tools, including adzes, bent knives, and planes. This class is a core requirement for a Certificate of Merit in carving.

The Totem Heritage Center will also host Youth Classes for Spring Break March 14-18 for ages 10–18. Haida weaver Holly Churchill will lead a morning class in Cedar Bark Weaving, and Tlingit artist Kelly White will lead an afternoon class in Northwest Coast Design. The registration fee is $125 for either class, materials included. Scholarships are available.
