The Trout Unlimited’s Habitat Improvement Committee, the U.S. Forest Service and volunteers worked to upgrade the habitat and improve the trail on the east side of the Mendenhall Lake on April 9. The group will meet again on Saturday, April 16, to continue the project.
On April 9, the group planted willow cuttings to help prevent erosion and placed toe-wood sod mats down to stabilize stream banks. The Forest Service will bring in rocks to form a single crossing over each drainage while others will be placed to discourage foot traffic in areas besides the single crossing. The group will plant alders, spruce and willows around the rocks to help re-vegetate the area.
Those who wish to volunteer should contact Chuck Caldwell, vice president of Juneau’s Trout Unlimited Chapter, at ceis@gci.net.
