Wildlife Wednesday to discuss swallow’s population decline

The next Wildlife Wednesday lecture will discuss the population decline of tree swallows.

Brenda Wright, a naturalist and birder, will give a talk titled “Where have all the swallows gone?” from 7-8 p.m. on Jan. 4 at the Mendenhall Valley Public Library.

“Tree swallows are common but overall population declined by 49% between 1966 and 2014, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey,” a poster for the event reads. “This is true in eastern Northern America, but what about Alaska?”

Wildlife Wednesday’s are hosted by the Alaska Wildlife Alliance and are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The next scheduled Wildlife Wednesday after this one will be on Feb. 1 by Steve Brockman and is titled “Eagles, Otters, and Wolves: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services in Southeast Alaska.” The March 1 talk will be delivered by brown bear researcher LaVerne Beier.
