Each week throughout the summer, the Juneau Public Libraries, in collaboration with the Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries and local businesses, award young readers various prizes for writing book reviews about their favorite summer reads. During the fourth week of this Summer Reading Program activity, the Juneau Public Libraries received 63 different book reviews from 35 different young readers under the age of 18. Here is a summary of the top book reviews from this week’s winners:
From the downtown library:
“The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger: “One fascinating part of this book is when Holden snuck back into his house to meet his little sister after dropping out of school .” — Meghna Bathija, age 17.
“I Broke My Trunk” by Mo Willems: “One fascinating part of this book is when Gerald says he also wanted to play the piano.”— Anderson Murray, age 6.
“Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein: “One fascinating part of this book is that this book has many poems. I really like poems. My favorite one is one called ‘Invitation’ at the beginning.”— Cagney Davis, age 9.
“Art & Max” by David Wiesner: “One fascinating part of this book is that Art gets covered in paint by Max. He then explodes all the paint off. He loves this part. Really the whole book. We are going to buy this book. Super awesome.”— Luke Glasow, age 2.

“Ruby Lu, Empress of Everything” by Lenore Look: “One fascinating part of this book is when Oscar puts magnets up his nose.” — Jack Lovejoy, age 10.
“Snow Treasure” by Marie McSwigan: “One fascinating part of this book is that a 12 year old Norwegian boy named Peter uses his love of sledding to save Norway which is at war with Germany.” — Addy Lanz, age 8.
“The Birthday Cake” by Sven Nordquist: “One fascinating part of this book is when they finally make the cake and when the bull charged the cat.” — Ayla Erickson, age 6.
“Octopuses” by Ann Herriges: “One fascinating part of this book is that octopuses use their suckers to smell and taste. ” — Jackson Taylor, age 7.
“Henry Hubble’s Book of Troubles” by Andy Myer: “My favorite part was when they were on the whale watching trip and the dolphin was riding a wake.” — Maren Armstrong, age 11.
