Each week throughout the summer, the Juneau Public Libraries, in collaboration with the Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries and local businesses, award young readers various prizes for writing book reviews about their favorite summer reads. During its fifth week, the Juneau Public Libraries received 31 different book reviews from 17 different young readers under the age of 18. Here is a summary of the top book reviews from this week’s winners:
From the Downtown Library:
“The Case of the Missing Moonstone” by Jordan Stratford: “One fascinating part of this book is how the girls manage to track down the thief” — Melia Lu Trousil, age 14.
“The Hobbit” by J.R.R Tolkien: “One fascinating part of this book is when Bilbo finds his companions caught in spider webs. But these are no ordinary spiders, these are MONSTER SPIDERS!!”— Clara Ferguson, age 8, almost 9.
“Diva and Flea” by Mo Wilems: “I laughed when Diva yelled Feet!”— Emilia Shelton-Walker, age 8.
From the Douglas Library:
“Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” by Grace Lin: “One fascinating part of this book is it’s a good book because of how big of an adventure you get to go on.” — Jossline Aranda-Jackson, age 11
“No Zombies Allowed” by Matt Novak: “One fascinating part of this book is that sea monsters were putting slime in the house so they couldn’t be invited to the party.” — Ireland Higgins, age 7

“Eight Keys” by Suzanne LaFleur: “I like how Elise’s Dad had to plan so far ahead to leave notes and clues for Elise.” — Raiya McCutcheon, age 10.
“The Almost Terrible Play Date” by Richard Torrey: “One fascinating part of this book is all of the illustrations were hand-drawn.”— Josie McElwain, age 11.
