KOKHANOK — A 17-year-old boy riding double on an all-terrain vehicle died in a crash on Iliamna (il-ee-AHM-nah) Lake 12 miles north of the village of Kokhanok.
The boy’s name has not been released.
Alaska State Troopers said the teen and another juvenile Thursday night were traveling at about 40 mph and didn’t see a snowbank on the ice.
The ATV hit the snowbank and flipped.
Neither rider wore a helmet. The ATV’s handlebar struck the 17-year-old boy as the vehicle flipped, causing severe head injuries.
Kokhanok residents including the village health aide responded to the scene. The teenager was found dead. His body was transported to the Kokhanok clinic.
The second juvenile suffered what troopers said were minor injuries.
Troopers are investigating the incident.
