ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers said two Fairbanks teenagers have died after a crash on the Richardson Highway.
Troopers said 17-year-old Carmela Flynn and 17-year-old Theresa Runfola died after the crash Monday afternoon near milepost 210 of the highway. Troopers say responders unsuccessfully attempted lifesaving efforts after the girls’ vehicle was submerged in a nearby river.
According to troopers, Flynn was driving the SUV northbound and lost control at a curve. Troopers say the vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by 37-year-old Lucas Clooten of Fairbanks.
Troopers said the SUV overturned and went into the river.
Troopers said Clooten was unable to avoid a collision. He was not injured.
Autopsies will be conducted by the state medical examiner’s office.
