On Monday, May 29, from 1-3 p.m., the Gastineau Channel Senior Center Advisory Council will be hosting its first-ever ice cream social to benefit the Southeast Nutrition Program for the Elderly and Meals on Wheels Program. The event will be hosted at the dining hall located at 895 W. 12th St. with the entrance being before the 12th Street bus stop, closer to Egan.
The ice cream — made and donated by local business owner Marc Wheeler of Coppa — has a unique story. Last week, Wheeler joined teacher Gwenna Corvez’s 2nd grade class at Harborview Elementary to teach students how to make ice cream. Wheeler then worked with the students to develop a flavor idea for the ice cream social.
Every week, Juneau’s Southeast Nutrition Program serves 20 meals to elders on Douglas, 125 meals to elders in downtown Juneau, and 300 meals to elders who cannot leave their homes through the Meals on Wheels Program. The Meals on Wheels Program depends on volunteers to deliver 60 meals a day on 6 different routes. Throughout the year, both programs combined help serve around 20,000 meals to elders in Juneau and Douglas. The programs are run through the Southeast Senior Services branch of Catholic Community Services.
“We are expecting federal cuts to the Senior Nutrition Program,” said Ward Lamb, President of the Gastineau Channel Senior Center Advisory Council and Meals on Wheels volunteer. “Our advisory council will need to generate more funds if this happens, and the ice cream social is one fun way to do this.”
The event is first come, first scooped. Adults are $8, children are $5, and a family of four is $25.
