ANCHORAGE — The Department of Public Safety says fundraising efforts have begun in the name of a state trooper dog killed Sunday but that the department is not behind the effort.
The department is not seeking donations and is warning against donating to solicitations on the “Go Fund Me” website.
The agency says the fundraising may be fraudulent.
Twenty-five-year-old Almando Abarca was charged Monday with felony assault, harming a police dog and failure to stop at the direction of a police officer.
Troopers say Abarca drove off after an attempted traffic stop in Palmer, turned into a driveway and fled into woods.
Troopers say Abarca fired shots that mortally wounded the dog. A trooper and a Palmer police officer fired at the suspect, who was struck in the shoulder and arrested.
