Alaska Airlines ranks No. 1 in fuel efficiency among U.S. Airlines, according to a report issued by the Washington D.C. think tank, the International Council on Clean Transportation.
This is the fifth consecutive year Alaska Air has been No. 1 in the rankings, which combine how much traffic the airline carries with how much fuel it consumes to generate a fuel efficiency score. A score of 1.00 represented average efficiency across all airlines.
Alaska’s efficiency scored 1.14, while the No. 2 airline, Spirit, had a score of 1.13. The bottom airline in the rankings, American, had an efficiency score of 0.91.
The scores cover efficiency in the 2014 calendar year.
The ICCT report credits Alaska’s efficiency to its newer aircraft and the addition of winglets that improve fuel efficiency by 1.5 percent.
