This week’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon will give local Chamber members a look at how the organization works on a statewide level.
Curtis W. Thayer, the President and CEO of the Alaska Chamber, will address the group at noon Thursday at the Hangar on The Wharf. Thayer will present an “Update on Alaska Chamber Priorities.”
Thayer has led the Alaska Chamber since late 2015, previously working as commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration and as deputy commissioner of the state Commerce, Community and Economic Development Department before that. Thayer also used to be the director of public and governmental affairs at Enstar Natural Gas Co. and was a spokesman for a project that looked to transport North Slope natural gas by pipeline to the Lower 48.
Alaska’s Chamber of Commerce actually predates the state, forming in 1952 as the “All Alaska” Chamber of Commerce, with the purpose of promoting commerce in Alaska. The organization has since changed its name down to merely Alaska Chamber, with the mission to “promote a healthy business environment in Alaska.”
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Juneau Chamber of Commerce members pay $20 and others pay $25. An RSVP is required for the event, which can be found on the Chamber’s website.
