ANCHORAGE — A man in state custody has died at an Anchorage hospital.
Alaska State Troopers say 26-year-old Mavaega Tautua had been housed at the Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward and had been transported to Anchorage for medical treatment.
Troopers say he died just before 1 p.m. Thursday.
The state medical examiner’s office is conducting an autopsy and the troopers’ Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death.
Tautua in 2011 was convicted of felony assault in a high-profile downtown Anchorage case.
Prosecutors said he fired shots that struck a rival gang member and a bystander.
