A North Douglas business office and residence were left in disarray after a reported burglary this past weekend, and approximately $170,000 worth of property is now missing.
According a Juneau Police Department press release, a burglary in the 3500 block of North Douglas Highway is estimated to have occurred sometime between 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Police were alerted Sunday afternoon to the break-in by the property’s owner.
The owner noticed on Sunday that a door was unlocked and that there was dirt on some steps leading up to a private residence in the building that also houses a private business office, according to the JPD press release. The property owner then discovered the building was in disarray. A JPD patrol officer and detective responded, and police said it appears someone gained entry into the building through a second story window that leads directly into the private residence.
JPD spokesperson Erann Kalwara said no one was living in the apartment at the time of the burglary and all the property that was stolen was private and did not belong to the attached downstairs business.
Kalwara said two rifles, cash, two gold watches and women’s jewelry were all reported missing. An older style, large Sentry Safe safe was also gone. The estimated value of those items is $170,000.
“JPD is actively working on the investigation and I am unable to share information about leads or evidence at this time,” Kalwara wrote to the Empire in an email Tuesday.
