It’s been almost 100 years since the Treadwell Mine operated on Douglas Island, but the mine has gotten quite a bit of press this year.
This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the cave-in that led to the mine’s closure in 1922, and one of the ways to commemorate that event is a Perseverance Theatre play that runs June 22-July 3. The play is based on “Treadwell Gold: An Alaska Saga of Riches and Ruin,” a book written by historian Sheila Kelly about the mine’s rise and fall.
Kelly will be giving a presentation at 7 p.m. tonight about her book, the mine and the upcoming production. The presentation, put on by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, will take place at the Douglas Library and is expected to last an hour.
The author will use first-person accounts from the sons and daughters of the Treadwell miners to illustrate what life was like at the mine in its heyday, and she’ll explain the way the mine helped build Juneau and Douglas into what they are today. Admission to the event is free, and those looking to purchase tickets to the play can do so at the Perseverance Theatre or can call 463-8497.
