Scholars from the University of Northern British Columbia are expanding a study conducted since 2012 with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. At question: Why do people hitchhike in British Columbia?
The question has a serious edge: More than a dozen murders, mostly of Native women, took place along BC’s Highway 16 between 1969 and 2011. The murders have caused the highway to be nicknamed the “Highway of Tears.”
The expansion of the program allows surveys to be conducted in the Peace River area as well as along Highway 16. The expansion was first reported by Alaska Highway News.
