CORNISH, N.H. — Rescuers have recovered the body of a 21-year-old man who drowned in the Connecticut River, an AmeriCorps member who was working at nearby St. Gaudens National Park.
Police in the town of Cornish say Reed McWilliams was from Bethel. He was swimming in the river with a woman on Tuesday when he did not resurface. Police got a 911 call at about 5:50 p.m. that came from the river bank of a farm.
McWilliams was spotted at about 7:20 p.m. in about 8 to 10 feet of water and was recovered by divers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gov. Maggie Hassan said in a statement she was saddened to learn of McWilliams’ death. He came to serve with the Student Conservation Association through AmeriCorps.
“This young man had dedicated himself to giving to others, setting a strong example of the spirit of civic engagement that helps define and strengthen our great nation,” she said.
