Juneauites might want to pair the sound of whipping winter winds with the sound of dripping faucets.
The City and Borough of Juneau issued a public service announcement on Friday reminding citizens to take measures to ensure that their pipes don’t freeze during this current cold stretch. The Public Works Water Utility can no longer thaw frozen pipes, according to the PSA, but there are a number of measures a citizen can take to prevent the pipes from freezing.
Leaving water running is the most common way to combat cold weather, as keeping a faucet dripping or leaving a small trickle going keeps the water circulating. CBJ also pointed out that even after temperatures rise above freezing, the ground is still frozen and can freeze a pipe, so keeping water going even after the temperatures rise is wise.
Other measures listed by CBJ include keeping crawl space vents closed, ensuring that pipes are properly insulated, plugging in heat tapes and disconnecting hoses and making sure they’re properly insulated.
If one’s pipes do freeze, CBJ suggests calling a plumber or contractor to fix it. For more information, citizens can call the Water Utility at 586-0393.
