With dogs already occupying a huge part of daily life in Juneau, the City and Borough of Juneau Parks &Recreation Department is looking into adding more areas specifically for dogs.

Before they go ahead and put in a dog park or more off-leash areas, the department is seeking community input. As part of its process for its Master Plan, Parks &Recreation has set up an online poll for the public to share thoughts on where and how to build dog parks in Juneau.

Project Manager Alexandra Pierce said that when Parks &Recreation was putting together its master planning process in 2016, it was clear that Juneau and Douglas residents were passionate about their four-legged friends.

“When we asked the community about living and playing in Juneau, we received a number of comments regarding dogs in parks, especially requesting additional fenced dog parks,” Pierce said in a release, “but we didn’t get a sense of specific locations where the need is greatest.”

The Master Plan, which is scheduled to be finished in 2018, will serve as a blueprint for the next 10 or 20 years of parks in Juneau. Currently, there’s a fenced dog park at Cope Park and an informal dog park at Lena Park. According to Gastineau Humane Society statistics given to the Empire in January, one of every 7.7 people in Juneau owns a dog.

The poll is live now, and can be reached through the Parks &Recreation page on the CBJ website. There’s a short registration process prior to taking the eight-question survey, which asks about dog parks and possible amenities to include.
