A boat was disabled and afloat in the water in a bay near Tracy Arm on Wednesday morning, and Coast Guard Station Juneau responders came to its aid, according to a Coast Guard release.
A person on a 28-foot bar tender MINI B reported via radio at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday that the vessel was disabled and adrift in the vicinity of Holkham Bay, about 38 miles away from downtown Juneau, according to the release. The Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RB-M), the release read, and safely towed the vessel and the person aboard to Harris Harbor.
The person on the boat did not seem to be in immediate danger, Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstander Scott Cichoracki said in a release, but responders wanted to play it safe.
“Alaska is known to have rapidly changing weather patterns, and this very easily could have escalated into a dangerous situation had we not been able to respond and assist quickly.”
Holkham Bay, also known as Sumdum Bay, is in Stephens Passage near Tracy Arm. The Coast Guard release stated that the wind was at 17 miles per hour, the seas were at two feet and there was seven miles of visibility.
