SITKA — The Coast Guard and Sitka Police Department’s emergency response vessel went to the rescue of a man and his dog after their 22-foot Seasport began taking on water near Kasiana Island, five miles northwest of town, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.
The man called the Coast Guard for help around 9 a.m., saying he and his dog were abandoning ship and getting into a Zodiac to wait for help, the police department said.
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter delivered a dewatering pump, while Good Samaritan vessels and the police emergency response vessel responded. The man and dog were taken aboard the ERV for a ride to town, with the Seasport in tow.
