The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Friday for a passenger who went overboard the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship, according to an Alaska State Trooper spokesman.
Trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain said in a phone interview with the Empire Friday that the 24-year-old woman’s fall overboard is not considered “suspicious.” The woman’s name has not been released by authorities.
Troopers and Coast Guard were alerted to a cruise ship passenger’s disappearance around 5:30 a.m. Thursday after she couldn’t be found in her room. The Daily Sitka Sentinel reported that Juneau Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios said security footage from the cruise ship showed the woman had gone overboard while the vessel was under way.
The cruise ship was on an eight-day cruise from Seattle to Glacier Bay.
Coast Guard Air Station Sitka searched via helicopter early Thursday morning for the woman along the Lynn Canal. The Coast Guard Cutter Liberty also took part in the search.
Coast Guard could not be reached by end of business day Friday for more comment about the conclusion of the search and rescue mission. Troopers did not assist with any search efforts on Friday.
