A company better known for its barge service to Alaska has gotten permission from the U.S. Department of Energy to import Canadian liquefied natural gas to Alaska.
On Tuesday, Crowley Maritime Corp. announced that it has received two-year import and export licenses that allow it to bring LNG to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska from Canadian sources in British Columbia.
Crowley spokeswoman Amelia Smith said by email that the company is “in the process of developing the LNG business in Alaska, based on many inquiries from customers interested in using LNG.”
She declined to provide specifics.
The import permits allow Crowley to import gas via tanker truck or in bulk via tanker ships.
Crowley is known for its tug and barge service on Interior Alaska rivers and for bringing large cargo to the North Slope and some coastal ports.
