A widespread power outage due to two damaged pole tops affected the Mendenhall Valley, airport area, Auke Bay and north of Juneau on Sunday night, with repairs expected to be made by midnight, according to Alaska Electric Light and Power Co.
The outage was reported by the company on its Facebook page at about 9:30 p.m., noting “power is out to multiple areas of town including including valley, Auke bay, and out the road. Crews are responding.”
At 10 p.m. a subsequent update stated “crew has located the damaged equipment. They are actively working on repairs. Power is expected to be restored in the next hour (possibly two) depending on how repairs go.” A further comment in response to a question noted two damaged pole tops caused the outage.
Power to many areas was restored by 11 p.m., although the airport area and parts of the Mendenhall Valley were still dark, according to an update at that time by the company. Power to remaining areas was restored overnight.
State Sen. Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks), stated in a social media message a flight from Anchorage that landed shortly before 10 p.m. was waiting on the tarmac due to the loss of power at Juneau International Airport. Numerous legislators and other Capitol workers returning to Juneau are on the flight.
Power was uninterrupted downtown, in Douglas and Lemon Creek.
