Delta Western plans new fueling station in Auke Bay

Company plans to turn the Gitkov Dock into a fuel station for larger sized vessels

Correction: An earlier version of this article’s photo caption incorrectly stated that the company which purchased the dock was Western Marine. The company that purchased the dock was Delta Western. The caption has now been updated.

Seattle-based Delta Western Petroleum has purchased the “Gitkov Dock” in Auke Bay and plans to have a fueling station up and running before next summer, according to Mike Johnson, Southeast marketing manager.

“We’re hoping to service mid-size and up (fishing boats and yachts),” Johnson said. “We’re shooting for January 1 but there’s not a whole lot of traffic then.”

Johnson said the hope is to be fully functional before the 2020 summer tourist season begins. Also known as the Seal Dock, DWP purchased the dock from John Gitkov in August and plans to have a fueling station with “a small tank farm, pipelines, marine dispensers, and used oil handling capabilities,” Johnson said in an email to the Empire.

It will hopefully allow for larger yachts and commercial vessels and help relieve congestion in the Don D. Statter Harbor area, according to Johnson.

“It’s a big deal for us,” he said.

Johnson declined to say how much the dock was purchased for.

In August, Delta Western settled with the Environmental Protection Agency over alleged violations at its tank farm at 120 Mount Roberts Street south of downtown Juneau. The company neither admitted nor denied any wrongdoing and agreed to pay $400,000 to the EPA.
